Haunting
I was most influenced by the “‘Platform Realism’. AI Image Synthesis and the Rise of Generic Visual Content” article. I decided to use screen recordings as my medium for this project as a way to incorporate haunting nature into something part of everyday life and to use AI. The “Platform Realism” article writes about a technology called the Paragraphica. This device is a camera-like structure that takes information and then adapts that into an image. The text explains, “Before the image, there is a text. When you ‘photograph’ a scene with Paragraphica, you first get a textual description, which is then transformed into a prompt, and the image you get is presented as a visualization of that prompt.” So, in my haunting project, I asked AI to create images of “haunted caving videos” and incorporated what it made into the video. It was quite different from what I was expecting, but seeing what it interpreted from the vague request was interesting. I chose to use caves as a central point because of the blog we looked at for class. I find the eerie, unknown nature of caves to be creepy and somewhat symbolic of technology. It is physically an abyss of complex and unknown systems. When AI is used, there are so many processes going on that you cannot see and the results can often seem quite unknown and unfamiliar like the inside of a dark cave.
